HOW I MET AMY KEYS

6

The story about how I met the incredible Amy Keys goes something like this. I was asked to audition for Dave Stewart’s new band. At that time, I had been dropped from Interscope, and I was ready for a project that did not require me to be front and center. So when I received the phone call asking me if I would be interested in trying out for Dave’s new project, I thought, Why the fuck not.

I was asked to play some of my music live. So I walked over to the piano and played Don’t Say. I feel like I got the job that day. Next thing I knew, I was in Dave Stewart and His Rock Fabulous Orchestra. The experience was fine, but what I loved most about it was meeting the incredible Amy Keys. Amy is a true professional. She has been asked to sing background vocals for Toto, Ringo Starr, Dave Stewart, and Genesis, and is currently on tour with Lyle Lovett. Above, you can see our vocal connection. Dave’s Rock Fabulous Orchestra performed at the Tower of London, and I sang Sweet Dreams. To say I had big shoes to fill is an understatement; I had Annie Lennox's shoes to fill. Next level challenge, my dears!

Amy’s voice and my voice always agreed with one another. I always felt so powerful singing with her. There is nothing to worry about when a vocalist like Amy Keys is standing next to you.

I leaned on her quite a bit. She taught me a lot without knowing it. She knew all of the background vocalist lingo. I was new to the scene back then. If I was confused, I asked Amy and she never judged me for not knowing. She was always willing to teach me something new. Both of us felt close to one another pretty quickly. When you meet people like that, there is always a reason, I believe that.

Singing next to someone like Amy Keys will up your game real fucking quick. Most of the time, I was in awe of her voice. I genuinely couldn’t believe the magic that effortlessly came out of her. On top of all that, she is always right there with you. I don’t know what else to say. She is a fucking icon.

The picture above is of Amy and me eating dinner on Paul Allen’s yacht, The Octopus. Dave Stewart wanted to record his album there. Needless to say, I was extremely excited to be a part of it. All of us had a blast at the mansion on the sea. The late Paul Allen was a lovely man. The night of this dinner, he told us the story about how he helped invent DAS. Ya, mind-blowing stuff

Anyway, I digress, I asked Amy years later to sing on my cover of “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” off The Sun Sessions EP. If you would like to listen to it, here it is➡️ Just Dropped In...

I spoke to Amy yesterday, and we laughed and caught up like kindred spirits do. When I get a solid date and time of our interview, I will let everyone know ASAP! I'm planning on doing a live on Thursday around 5 pm, and by then, I will know what my next free download will be and when our interview will be, hopefully. I will give you a hint as to what I am leaning towards. I am going through an incredible amount of old demos, piles and piles of CDs, and have discovered a few gems. Stay tuned!
