A few days ago, it was the 13th anniversary of the release of the video for the Cole Porter song “What Is This Thing Called Love,” directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch. This super seductive version of the legendary tune is off my Sun Sessions EP, which I recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2009. Anyway, when it was time to pick the song I would make a music video for, there was no doubt in my mind it was going to be for What Is This Thing Called Love. The other thing I was quite certain of was that I wanted my dear friend Jenn Lynch to direct it.
Jenn Lynch and I had been friends for almost a decade by that time, having spent a great deal of time together in the early 2000s. Not only is Jenn a brilliant director, but she is a brilliant person. No one has her sense of humor. I can’t tell you how many times I nearly peed myself from laughing so hard while in her presence. Luckily, she agreed to direct the video, and I suggested we go up to my Big Bear cabin at the time to film it. So, with the help of Sydney Lynch, who did my makeup, Shane Daly who did all the cinematography and Vicki Anne who styled the shoot and my dear friend Charlie Newmark who acted in the video, we headed up to Big Bear and shot what was to become the official music video for What Is This Thing Called Love.
We were probably up there for about 2 days, and truthfully, I am surprised we got much done because I remember nothing but laughter the entire time. Once we wrapped, we headed down the hill, and the editing process began.
What Jenn decided on was this black and white seductive feel. I love how one shot bleeds into the next. I am forever honored to have worked on not one but two music videos with her. Sidenote: I also played a prostitute in her movie Chained starring Vincent D’Onofrio.
